Performance Notes

  • Each group of four notes is actually an arpeggio, or chord with the notes played individually.
  • Get the left hand ready for all four notes at once; do not release any of the notes until it is time to get ready for the next four.
  • Some notes stay the same from group to group, do not move any of the fingers that fret those notes while getting ready for the next group.
  • If you forget where a note is, use the Note Finder.
  • If you forget a rhythm, use the Rhythm Finder.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Practice each lesson several times if necessary before moving on to the next one.
  • Complete all of the lessons before moving on to the next Exercise.
  • Always use correct right hand technique when finger picking.
  • Lesson 1: Without the video, practice and memorize the whole piece very slowly. Play the notes with the correct left hand fingers, right hand fingers and good right hand technique.
  • Lesson 2: Play the music slowly with the video; say the left hand fingers out loud.
  • Lesson 3: Jump to 1:15 in the video. Play the music slowly with the video; say the right hand fingers out loud. Note that in the video, Michael is counting the rhythm, but say the right hand fingerings and play at his rhythm.
  • Lesson 4: Jump to 1:15 in the video. Play the music slowly with the video; say the counts out loud.
  • Lesson 5: Without the video, play the melody slightly faster. Count out loud but make sure you are using the correct left hand fingers, right hand fingers and good right hand technique.
  • Lesson 6: Jump to 2:28 in the video. Play the music at the final tempo with the video.
